Likes don’t save lives, Money does

Familiar gak sih gambar di atas? Paling gak, gambar itu pasti mengingatkan kalian sama post atau page di Facebook yang minta likes banyak, dengan embel-embel bahwa itu merupakan bentuk support terhadap sebuah charity cause. Setiap Like sangat berarti, dan biasanya sih ada target. 1000 likes dapet kucing, misalnya kayak gambar di atas. Atau setiap 1000 likes, nanti bakal ada yang memberikan donasi dalam jumlah tertentu. Atau kalau gak salah, dulu pernah ada juga post yang bilang kalau setelah dapet likes dalam jumlah tertentu, ada anak kurang mampu yang bakal dioperasi secara gratis gitu, Sampe ada karikaturnya, di mana ada dokter disuruh ngoperasi dan dokternya yang lagi duduk depan komputer merespon dengan “Sebentar, nunggu dapet 10 likes. Baru ada 8 likes nih.”

Absurd.

See, gue punya standpoint yang cukup jelas terhadap kegiatan-kegiatan charity yang minta likes dalam jumlah tertentu di Facebook, dan menurut gue itu absurd setengah mati. Mungkin gue termasuk golongan pesimistis dan old-fashioned, tapi gue dari dulu merasa bahwa mau satu post dapet likes sebanyak apaan tau di Facebook, tetep gak ada gunanya kalau gak ada orang yang mau bener-bener berkontribusi. Dan berapa banyak sih dari orang-orang yang heboh ikutan nge-like terus nyebarin post minta like itu yang bener-bener contributed to the cause?

Liking those post on Facebook are not an act of activism. Those are slacktivism. And yes, that is a real term. Slacktivism, menurut Oxford Dictionaries, adalah “actions performed via the Internet in support of a political or social cause but regarded as requiring little time or involvement, e.g. signing an online petition or joining a campaign group on a social media website.” So, gerakan minta Likes di Facebook yang tadi gue omongin? Slacktivism.

I don’t have anything against slacktivism, because frankly I think that it’s still an act of showing that you care. I just happened to have a very skeptical point of view when it comes to gathering likes on Facebook in the name of a cause. Atau mungkin itu karena gue memang agak antipati sama Facebook. Yeah, mungkin itu.

Karena slacktivism toh bukan sekedar ngumpulin likes di Facebook. Tanda tangan petisi di change.org untuk mendukung perubahan UU ITE yang dianggap terlalu membatasi kebebasan berekspresi, misalnya. Atau pasang pink twibbon di avatar twitter untuk mendukung breast cancer awareness. Something as simple as retweeting tweets about facts and movements for a cause that you support, or make your own tweet about it. Or maybe if you’re a bit more devoted, fund a project for a certain cause on kickstarter.

Have you done any of the aforementioned acts? You probably have. I have, and I’ll admit that I’m also a slacktivist, no matter how hypocrite that is considering I just spent the first half of this post ranting about how skeptical I am about slacktivism on Facebook. Like it or not, we’re all slacktivists in the world of social media. Why? Because it’s easy.

And that’s the point of slacktivism. Supporting something without really committing to it. It requires only a small amount of time, with little to no obligations, and no one would really mind if you suddenly backed out because you lose interest. Bandingin sama bergabung di sebuah organisasi sosial dan ikut berpartisipasi dalam sebuah proyek, di mana kamu harus menginvestasikan waktu, tenaga, dan bahkan mungkin uang. Belum lagi kamu gak bisa tiba-tiba mundur tanpa merasakan beban moral karena mengabaikan tanggung jawab.

Dan itu lah masalah dari slacktivism.

It feels like you’ve done something good already, when the truth is you don’t actually contribute anything. Yes you like the post, you put on a twibbon, you retweeted it, that’s good. But do you take action in real life? Because a study that Metro News (no, not Metro TV. UK‘s Metro News) cited shows that charities are losing out thanks to slacktivism. I don’t necessarily says that slacktivism is a bad thing. It does have it good perks, especially in this era of media convergence. News travel fast through social media, and slacktivism generates more awareness from people. Those who used to know nothing about Joseph Kony now may know about his war crimes and helps waging a war against him and LRA thanks to Invisible Children and their campaign. But not all causes that were raised in social media actually ended up like Koin untuk Prita. More often it’s just an act of slacktivism, and that’s that. You’ll forget about it soon enough, and then you did nothing about it. End of story.

Slacktivism may raises awareness and garner attention, but at the end, it’s the real action that counts. Because likes doesn’t save lives, money does.

Just like what Unicef has so eloquently put on their ads for polio vaccine.
