Bless Collective Intelligence

Masih inget sama budaya googling? Kalau masih inget, dan kalau kalian termasuk “pelaku”, pasti bakal akrab banget sama tampilan sejenis ini:

u&gwikip
Just a hearty reminder of MPK and group research *sighs*

Okay.jpg.

Why does it matter, though?

But then again, that’s not what I want to talk about – go here if you want more insight on Wikipedia. I’m more intrigued about this whole collective intelligence stuff and how to tweak it in a lighter tone. Yes, people, we’ll go down the fandom road once again. SuitBuckle up!

Collective intelligence gak cuma bisa dipake buat Wikipedia aja, gais. Proses mengumpulkan pengetahuan bersama tentang suatu hal dan kemudian dikompilasi untuk dijadikan sumber informasi untuk umum, juga terjadi di dunia fandom and the result is glorious.

One of my favorite website - designed specifically to make fangirl's life easier
One of my favorite website – designed specifically to make fangirl’s life easier

Basically, that website is a compilation of everyone’s knowledge about any video or news related to their favorite K-Pop artists (in this case: SM artists, Beast, and Infinite). Gue gak perlu lagi menghabiskan waktu clawing through google search results or youtube videos untuk mencari video yang gue pengen. Be it performances, subbed variety shows, or concerts even, ada kok di blog itu – thanks to collective intelligence and fans’ urge to share and corrupt more people.

Or, of course, if you want something with a little more fun – and dedication, you can go to wikia.com: The Social Universe for Fans, by Fans. Berawal dari ide yang dicetuskan oleh Angela Beesley dan Jimmy Wales – none other than Wikipedia’s creator – Wikia is sorta kinda a Wikipedia for Popular Culture. Gue sendiri sebenarnya gak sengaja nemu wikia beberapa hari yang lalu, ketika for no real reason at all gue penasaran sama umur karakter anime di bawah ini.

I know that this is entirely unrelated to the post but I could careless because I'm currently infatuated with this 2D fictional character. And by the way - he's 34. Yeah, curiosity killed the cat
I know that this is entirely unrelated to the post but I could careless because I’m currently infatuated with this 2D fictional character named Lance Corporal Rivaille or Levi. And by the way – he’s 34. Yeah, curiosity killed the cat

And that is when I stumbled upon his wikia page. Which led me to Shingeki no Kyojin’s wikia page. Needless to say, I was very very delighted. Karena biarpun Wikipedia menyediakan informasi yang lumayan lengkap, tapi wikia jauh lebih menyenangkan, what’s with all the pictures and videos and references and trivias *squeal and giggles in delights*.

It’s not just that, though. With over 350.000 wikias about almost all aspects of popular culture, Wikia is a huge network of fans’ collective intelligence and collaborative works. Mau apa deh. Marvel Universe? Doctor Who? Big Bang Theory? Hunger Games? Legends of Korra? Make up? Coffee? Grand Thef Auto? You name it. Heck even Super Junior have a wikia page.

Lewat Wikia, fans bisa membagi apapun yang dia tahu mengenai object of interests mereka – baik itu games, tv series, film, komik, novel, masakan, olahraga, mobil, dan entah apa lagi. Wikia adalah tempat di mana fans bisa berkolaborasi, belajar, memberikan informasi, and most importantly, create. Wikia is full of rich original content, and that is what makes it extremely appealing. Go read more about it on their about page *softly nudges*, bakal jauh lebih informatif. And while you’re there, don’t forget to check out some wikias – and more.

Because hey, even collective intelligence can be fun, and everyone can be a part of it. Because what’s better than write and share knowledge about the thing that you really, really, like?

  1. i thoroughly enjoyed reading this. *insert appreciative comments about how beautifully you write*

    yeah that’s probably it.

wait no. i haaaaaaave a question (of course i do)
how do you think (indonesian) people’s “unwillingness” to contribute connect to their cultural characteristics? bukannya kita bangsa “gotong royong”, “kekeluargaan”? apakah akar masalahnya cuma infrastruktur (well, dan literacy) or is it rooted deeper than that? (this is actually my blogpost thesis, so.. thoughts! :D)

    1. Oh darling you don’t know how you make my day with that compliment. Thanks, love :”)

Naaah itu juga sebenernya pertanyaan gue. Kalau menurut gue ada banyak faktor sih. Pertama jelas, infrastruktur. Udah jadi rahasia umum kan kalau koneksi internet kita itu suka nyaingin kura-kura saking bikin frustasinya. How could you post anything on Wikipedia when it takes ages to open the damned page? And I think that non-material gain is a concept that’s most of us still have difficulty understanding. Ketiga, as you have so nicely put it on your theory, apathy. Males aja. Males ngapa-ngapain dan males berbagi, apalagi tanpa personal gain kayak yg gue bilang.

Yeah, I suppose that’s all?
